Always #Keep It Real: New Moon Girls Lead

We Never Photoshop Girls or Women

Media by and about and supportive of real girls is why New Moon Girls exists. That sums up our mission and our work. Our passion and our vision, year in and year out.

It’s why my daughters and I created the print magazine led by the Girls Editorial Board way back in 1992. It’s why we added the safe social network in 2008 and the e-magazine in May.

It’s why we’ve never photoshopped an image of a girl or woman.  NEVER.  And we never will.

Miss Representation, Spark Summit, I Am That Girl and LoveSocial launched the #KeepItReal campaign to tell other magazines–the vast majority of magazines–that they should pledge to publish one feature per issue with non-photoshopped images.

We support the campaign wholeheartedly. Change in mega-media is greatly needed and very welcome. At the same time we don’t want the attention focused on the problem of mega-media to miss the significance that New Moon Girls and a few others have always done the right thing by not photoshopping.

Why have we gone against the industry norm and never photoshopped? Because a photoshopped image weakens the believability of any article it accompanies. I can’t trust an article about “feeling confident” when it includes photos of airbrushed, flawless-looking girls.

Girls can’t trust those articles either. And seeing them in magazine after magazine can sadly make a tween or teen girl question her own accurate perception of reality. The photoshopped images undermine the nurturing and healthy messages that the magazines claim they are putting forward.

See how 12-year-old Ava says it affects her.

Instead, New Moon Girls uses photos and illustrations of girls as they are in daily life. We know how important it is for girls to see themselves and others like them in the media that influences their thoughts and dreams.

As the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media says, “If She Can See It, She Can Be It.”  Of course, when what girls see is photoshopped fake perfection, they can never “be it.” And we don’t want them to!

New Moon Girls helps girls accept and value themselves for who they are–imperfections and all. They CAN be what they see in our publications and on our social network. It’s true and it’s real. Always.

Girls deserve nothing less. And our goal is to give them everything they deserve to get from media: inspiration, support, community, new perspectives, more understanding of the world, articles and images that respect them and give them courage.

Support Girls 24/7

Joe and I started New Moon Girls with Mavis and Nia when we found there were no practical, accessible resources for our tween daughters. We worried that society’s expectations of who they “should” be were coming on strong. So we supported them by creating New Moon: a magazine for Girls and their Dreams, now both the magazine and a safe social network.

We set out to support our daughters, and all girls, to feel strong and proud being themselves and living their dreams. After 18 years, we haven’t stopped because tween and teen girls still need this support from outside their family. They need to see  and connect with other girls who aren’t bowing to the pressures of popular culture to dumb down, focus only on appearance, and limit their dreams for themselves.

Make the girls in your life happy and head them toward all the great things they can be! Expand their horizons by giving them New Moon Girls.

Happy Birthday to Us

Guest Post by Luna, The Spirit of New Moon

I can’t believe Autumn is already here and September is drawing to a close. The change of seasons has me reflecting on all the changes New Moon has gone through and the wonderful memories we’ve made.

September is a birthday for us: two birthdays actually. This month marks the 16th year of continuous publication of New Moon Girls magazine. It also marks the 1 year anniversary of NewMoon.com, the website that has revolutionized how we reach girls and how girls participate with each other to create the New Moon community.

Back in 1993, singer/songwriter Ann Reed wrote and recorded a beautiful song for us. You can hear the song at www.newmoon.com/my_room/?userID=8. Marisa, Associate Editor at New Moon, dug up early photographs and combined then with photos of New Moon at work today and Ann’s song to create a video. Thank you, Marisa! The result is beautiful. It really takes us back to the hope, optimism, hard work, and great accomplishments of those early years, and shows us how truly alive the mission still is today.

I’m so happy to be able to share this memory and the wonderful history of New Moon with you. I hope you like it as much as we do.

Welcoming the New Girl

Luna is the “Spirit of New Moon Girls.” She’s been with New Moon, the magazine and website for girls, from the very beginning. We like to say that every girl and woman has a little bit of Luna inside of her.

These days, Luna is also a blogger! Here’s the most recent post from Luna’s Blog:

I love seeing what girls are sharing on New Moon, and today a wonderful sticker exchange caught my eye. So here’s a shout out to ten-year-old Maeve and eight-year-old Sarah-4-ever-100!

The sticker exchange is how girls share messages on New Moon. Usually when someone is new at New Moon, the first thing they want to learn is how to get and give stickers! I love seeing members welcome newcomers with their first stickers, and that’s just what Sarah-4-ever-100 did for Maeve. Thank you, Sarah-4-ever-100, for making Maeve feel welcome in our great girl community!

Even a small gesture of friendship, like giving a sticker, can mean a lot to a person. It meant a lot to Maeve. She replied, “hey sarah i thought i would give u a sun because u were so nice to leave me a sticker because im new. so i think u have a  bright spirit. i think we should b friends.”

I loved seeing this message, because friendship is what New Moon is all about! So when you see someone new at New Moon Girls, don’t forget. Welcome them with a sticker! It’s a great way to build friendship and community. And it’s easy to find new girls on the site. Just go to the homepage and click on the I’m New message. Here’s a picture of what it looks like!

Thank you New Moon Girls for being so great!
