Nancy, Mavis & Nia

Being the mom of two amazing girls who are now amazing women has been one of the most amazing journeys of my life.

New Moon Girls and Daughters.com both owe their existence to Nia & Mavis’ influence.  Because of them, I discovered a passion that became my life mission: supporting parents, teachers, grandparents, researchers, business & political leaders, mentors and others in helping us all raise resilient, creative girls to be powerful women in their lives and in the world.

My husband Joe Kelly is also key to this passion and my opportunity to follow a dream and make it reality: making New Moon Girls  a community for girls who support each other in staying true to themselves as they grow from girls to women.  Joe’s work at Dads and Daughters continues today with his blog.

Part of the introduction to my book, How To Say It to Girls: Communicating with Your Growing Daughter says this as well as anything:

The journey of raising girls is a rich and unexpected one. It takes us deep into ourselves as well as out into the world, in ways we can never fully imagine until they happen.  Our daughters have provided me and Joe with our greatest challenges and our most rewarding experiences. Every time we thought we had it figured out, something happened to remind us that the essence of parenting is continuous learning, both about our daughters and ourselves. We’re usually grateful for that when we’re not exhausted by it!

As the founder of New Moon Girls, I am also told by thousands of other girls what they need and expect from the adults in their lives. Hearing about them and from them has given me the great gift of awareness and respect for girls and what they know. It has also shown me just how much girls need from adults. They depend on us to really know them as individuals and do what’s best for them. Deep down, they want us to provide them with informed and loving guidance.

And one of the best ways to give them informed guidance is to connect with others who care about girls, whether they are parents or scientists, business owners or politicians. The purpose of this blog is to give you a place to find the information and opinions about raising girls and also a place to share your knowledge and experiences. Thanks for joining us.

    Hi Nancy,

I love New Moon and Daughters.com you truly have a lot to be proud of. I’m not a parent yet, but I used to be a middle school teacher and my girls truly needed material like New Moon and Daughters.com. Although I’m not teaching anymore the magazine and sites should be a must for all girls. I love everything that New Moon represents.
I recently wrote a young adult novel geared to girls called I’m Changing; Friendships, Drama, and Oh…The Comma! The book talks about growing up and adjusting to all the changes a tween girl goes through. It’s terrific knowing that girls have so many resources, now if we can find something for the boys, lol.

Thanks – you are so right. Girls and parents need supportive media and others to connect with. It helped me and my daughters a ton. And we DO need something similar for boys and their parents – someone with a son needs to start that.

Last summer Amy Rae Elifritz went from being a healthy and happy 20 year old with her whole life ahead to losing her life in a matter of days  . . .  sadly, this could have been prevented.

Did you know that tampon related Toxic Shock Syndrome is real, relatively common, and can be deadly?  Last summer when Amy experienced flu-like symptoms the fact that she was menstruating seemed unimportant.  A few days later, on June 13, she died from Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

Lisa Elifritz, Amy’s Mom, founded You ARE Loved to help raise awareness about the link between tampons and TSS with the goal of saving lives.   This summer, our new non-profit organization is seeking to mobilize bloggers to help spread the message and is inviting you to write a blog post on this important topic.
I encourage you to read this note, visit us online (website: http://www.you-are-loved.org/ — Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/amyelifritz –, Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/youarelovedtss), read our informational brochure: http://issuu.com/youareloved/docs/youareloved_brochure, view a two part story by the Indianapolis CBS affiliate WISH-TV (part 1: http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/i_team_8/whats-killing-hoosier-women-tss-toxic-shock?ref=scroller&categoryId=10001&status=true and part 2: http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/local/marion_county/toxic-shock-i-team-8-investigation-attracts-attention), read how others have participated in our blogging blitz (sample general TSS awareness post: http://thistalkaintcheap.blogspot.com/2011/05/tss-you-are-loved.html – about TSS, sample puberty education and TSS awareness post: http://www.shopaholicmommy.net/2011/06/puberty-education.html and sample of a parenting expert featuring us as a guest post: http://blog.anniefox.com/2011/06/15/guest-blogger-tss-101-know-before-you-flow/)and also to do your own research.
We will be adding a section to our website linking to blogs featuring information about TSS and You ARE Loved.  Please share the url of any post you make so that we can include it on that page.
Thanks in advance for considering the opportunity to partner with You ARE Loved in our effort to raise awareness about tampon related Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

    Hi Nancy,

Noticed you posted on autism earlier today. UCLA Extension’s Pathway program (2-year certificate) is hosting an informative free online live video chat on Nov. 16th at 2 p.m. for young adults with down syndrome, autism, aspergers, and other intellectual disabilities. We will discuss what’s next after high school, independent living, meaningful employment, and much more. This is a subject area that is not touched on nearly as much as it should be.

We would love for you to join us and share with your readers or tweeters. For more information, please go to our event page: http://uclaexlivechat.eventbrite.com/.

To submit questions in advance, email livechat@uclaextension.edu.

We want to hear from parents, siblings, teachers, and advocates who want more insight on how to better the lives of their loved ones.

    Many thanks!

    Celia

    Hi
    Nancy,

I work at an amazing little semester school called Coastal Studies for
    Girls.  The
stunning coast of Freeport, Maine provides a meaningful context where girls
from independent, public or home-schooled backgrounds from across the nation
and around the world may explore, learn and grow.  We are the country’s first and only science and leadership semester school, where 10th
grade girls with a passion for discovery, an adventurous spirit, and a desire
for challenge are actively exploring coastal marine ecosystems, engaging in
rigorous college preparatory courses, and realizing their leadership potential
in a supportive living and learning environment.

We provide an educational opportunity that enriches the traditional path most girls take through high school.  I feel like we may be a resource that fits with your message about raising strong, intelligent, loving community members.   Would I be able to share more information with you?  My email is molly@coastalstudiesforgirls:disqus.org.

    All the best,
    Molly
