Izzy & Friends Sponsor New Moon Girls

Izzy's Letter

Letter to New Moon Girls

Talk about how girls inspire us – at New Moon Girls this happens pretty much every day.  Every girl has her own way of surprising us with what she does and shares.  All our staff and volunteers love getting inspired just in the course of our work – what a gift!

For example, Izzy is a devoted and active member of our safe social network. She wanted to support NMG so much that she asked friends coming to her birthday party to not bring presents but instead to give $5.00 to help sponsor memberships for girls and groups who can’t afford them!

Her letter to us  said:

My name is Izzy, short for Isabella, and I am one of your members. Since you need money to keep New Moon girls going, for my b-day, I didn’t ask for presents.  Instead I asked for a $5.00 donation to NMG (some people gave more.) So here is the $75.00! Hope it helps! -Izzy

Yes, it helped a lot, Izzy.  It means that three girls organizations are getting memberships sponsored by you and your friends. And it warmed our hearts.

THANK YOU IZZY & FRIENDS.

You can sponsor memberships for girls.  And help spread the word about NMG to others – it’s easy.

8 Gifts that Last

There are so many enticing gifts to give. We’re bombarded with the offers every day, especially this time of year. But we all know that after the initial excitement, many gifts just don’t hold their appeal. That seems especially true with kids toys and games. That’s why I want to consider gifts that really last! These are a list of gifts that keep on giving either through involvement or by building great memories.

  1. Membership to NewMoon.com! Help girls honor and express their true selves with New Moon Girls magazine (6 issues) and safe social network (24/7 365 days).
  2.  Lessons: piano, horseback riding, harp, voice, acting, painting, dance, tumbling, archery . . . whatever she wants to try!
  3. Books: They last forever! Check out our 30 Great Books for Girls.
  4. Travel! Consider a family trip instead of individual gifts. Plan the trip together. You won’t regret it.
  5. A special night/day out! Go see a play, ballet, special sporting event. Have a big night or day out on the town (or get out of town). Be Creative! Do something special that is out of the ordinary.
  6. Chore exchange: “I’ll walk the dog so you can go sliding each day after school for one week!”
  7. Throw a special party! Maybe a fantastic swim party or theme party is just the ticket to great fun.
  8. Special coupons: 20 minute back rub, I’ll take your chores for one night, stay up late! Give your daughter the gift of creative thinking!

Gretchen Bleiler. Unstoppable Inspiration!

<>

If you can’t be in the Olympics, it’s still pretty cool to interview an Olympian! Rebecca, a Girls Editorial Board member, got to do just that! Here’s her interview with Olympic snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler.

Gretchen tells girls how to follow their snowboarding and winter goals no matter what they are. “You will be successful when you’re doing what you love!” She says.

She shares her own long and short-term snowboarding goals along with her passion for the environment. She offers many practical tips on how we can all keep global warming at bay and keep the snow coming! In fact she challenges girls to use re-usable bags, water bottle and food containers—do this for 21 days to form a good habit. Find more tips at Stop Global Warming.

Gretchen carries her message through the “Be Unstoppable” movement – a celebration of physical activity that inspires others to be unstoppable, shines the spotlight on women and girls in active moments and shows how they can exude confidence with every move they make, every day.

Starting New Moon Girls

Isaura & Nancy

Isaura & Nancy

It’s the National Day of Listening created by Story Corps.  We’re excited about girls interviewing family and friends–and even themselves–about any life experience story they want to tell.

To kick things off on New Moon Girls, one of our members, Isaura, interviewed me about how we started New Moon Girls.  I enjoyed sharing the story with her.

Isaura is a very active member of NMG who posts often on our safe social network.  I got the chance to ask her what she likes about NMG and loved her response,

I like the way girls are friendly on NMG and I like how girls are proud of the writing and art and videos and other things they share there.

Isaura also showed her courage in doing the interview with me.  She has Asperger’s and it’s difficult for her to meet and talk with new people in person. Doing it online is more comfortable for her and is one of the things she likes about NMG.  Her mom Lori told me that Isaura cares so much about NMG that she was willing to do the interview with me in person .

It was great to meet her and Lori.   I’m very inspired by you and proud of you, Isaura.

Be inspired by more girls and their creations at New Moon Girls – Enjoy!

Grateful for Gratitude

Turkey’s roasting in the oven and spreading its once-a-year aroma through the apartment.  18 month old Lucy is back home to nap between a morning of 6 grandparents (two on Skype) and a late afternoon meal with her parents and two-thirds of the grandparents.

It’s a little lull in the cooking day for me, Joe and our long-time friends Linda and Robert.  We’ve celebrated Thanksgiving together nearly every year since 1988 when we moved in across the street from in Duluth.

Even though we make many of the same dishes year after year, we try at least a couple different things each time. This time it’s chocolate pecan pie with a gluten-free pecan-coconut crust, made by Sarah specially for me. And Ryan brought lefse, his Norwegian family’s tradition.

Our daughters are in San Francisco with their family of friends there.  We haven’t done Thanksgiving often with them since they went to college. We all agree that being together for Christmas is more important to us even though we truly love Thanksgiving.

I’m feeling grateful for so much.  Family and friends are healthy enough and so far we’ve weathered the recession and some job losses well enough.  New Moon Girls has survived its most difficult financial year ever and we’re feeling hopeful about the future.

There’s also plenty I’m not grateful for but I’ll think about that another time.  Today, the comfortable companionship of old friends and our traditional foods is enough.
