Holiday Craft and Gift Ideas!

Lots of holidays are coming up that are celebrated by different cultures and religions. New Moon Girls is celebrating these holidays by sharing some awesome girl-created craft and gift ideas for you to share with your friends and family!

Hanukkah, The Festival Of Lights, will begin at sunset on December 20 and end at sunset on December 28. Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple. Rebecca, 14, Vermont and her family celebrate Hanukkah; read her story and try out her recipe for potato latkes — a traditional Hanukkah food! ADA, 13, California posted a poll asking girls what holidays they celebrate. Did you know that 50% of the girls who answered celebrate Hanukkah?

Christmas is celebrated on December 25. It celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, according to Christian tradition. To learn more about what Christmas is all about, check out Luna’s story Merry Christmas!, or this awesome story from Kati the Kitti, 14, Connecticut. Maya, 11, Florida rewrote the story Twas the Night Before Christmas from the point of view of a cat! Read it here!

Kwanzaa begins the day after Christmas on December 26 and lasts until January 1. It is an African holiday that celebrates and honors African heritage, pride, community, family and culture. For more information on the holiday of Kwanzaa, check out this great informational article from Luna! Do you celebrate Kwanzaa? OSOM: Teen Conference 2011 (7-6-11)

It’s that time of year again!  Jack and Jill Far West Region Teen Conference 2011 was just as exciting and fulfilling as last summer.  This year, the Oakland/Bay Area chapter hosted the event at the University of California Berkeley.  Visiting such an historic and academically acclaimed college was very inspiring and provided a candid look into campus life.

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is the oldest African-American family organization. It started in 1938 in Philadelphia.  Today, we have over 225 chapters in 35 states and the District of Columbia.   Each year, there are three Teen Conferences (Eastern, Mid West, and Far West Regions) where chapters come together for fellowship.

This year’s theme was “A World Without Black People”.  Each chapter explained how they interpreted the theme by creating a t-shirt, a scrapbook, community service board, and a skit; each chapter always tries its best to win each category and claim bragging rights for the next school year.  Our long weekend also included a Lake Merritt volunteer day, meetings, recreational outings, dances, and a Senior Banquet.

Jada’s Side of the Moon (J.S.O.M.)

In modern America, sometimes the media does not recognize the value of each race to its survival.  Inventions, concepts, and works all fall under the umbrella of “American”, which sometimes decreases the feeling of cultural identity in children today.  While our Teen Conference focused on the contributions African Americans made toward society today, I realized the world would drastically change if any nationality were erased from history.

All of our meetings, discussions, and voting sessions really stress the importance of leadership in the community.  I learned my voice has the potential to truly impact the world, giving me a sense of empowerment no one can alter.

New Moon Girls Media is a reflection of the Teen Conference.   New Moon is full of different types of girls, and all of the New Moon Girls have opinions that are heard on this site.  Many go beyond the web and apply New Moon values to their lives.  You girls are role models in your communities and actively seek to encourage girls around you.  .

What special qualities and contributions do your backgrounds lend to the world today?  Share your heritages on the message board!

What is the importance of children to the world’s future?  How do you all involved in your communities?

What’s your side of the moon?

We're Very Sorry for Our Error

We have an important announcement to make. If you are already a New Moon Girls magazine subscriber, but you don’t have an online membership yet, you are now eligible to join online for free! To do so, your parent must have your Customer # ready (it’s located on the shipping label of your July/August magazine) and call 800.381.4743.

But we also must apologize. There’s a big mistake in the phone number printed in the July/August magazine. One digit was mistyped on p. 7 & 15, giving you the wrong number.

The CORRECT NUMBER to call is 800.381.4743 to give permission for a girl to join the NewMoon.com web community. Please do not call the mistyped number that’s in the magazine; it is not owned, operated, or in any way associated with New Moon Girl Media, Inc. or New Moon Girls.

Please accept our apologies, and be sure to use the correct number, 800.381.4743. Questions? Email help@newmoon.com. Thanks for understanding and for supporting New Moon Girls!

Growing Up = Some Serious Stuff

Hey Girls! I’m feeling a bit serious today. I talk  a lot about the great creations girls post in places like the Moon Glow Art Gallery and Poetry. It’s wonderful to celebrate our creativity as we grow! And I love all the joyful expression I see on New Moon.

But I also know that there are lots of things girls have to deal with that aren’t so fun or celebratory. On the Love Remembers message board, I see girls talking about really tough topics–like having a parent who lives so far away they can only visit once a year, learning that a pet has cancer and is going to die, feeling terrible loss when a best friend moves away, and many more.  In Ask a Girl, I see girls asking for advice on friendship conflicts, feeling fearful about having their first period, hating to watch their parents fighting, and lots of other tough topics.

I’m glad New Moon is a place of celebration and creative expression. And I’m also really glad it’s a safe place where girls can ask their tough questions, express their sadness, yell out their frustrations, and get support from other girls who understand. I know that being young can’t protect a person from loss, hurt, or confusion. And when those tough times come along, we all need someone we can trust to turn to. Thank you, New Moon Girls, for being there for each other.
