Happy Ada Lovelace Day!

Who is Ada Lovelace? She became, not the first female computer programmer, but the world’s first computer programmer in the early 1840s. She worked with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, and wrote math sequences that this early version of a computer could understand.

Today is a day to celebrate Ada, when in a time where women rarely had careers, she forged her own path and created a career on her own in the field of technology. Today is also a day to celebrate and recognize women all over the world or work in STEM (Science, Technological, Engineering, and Math) fields. More and more women are following in Ada’s footsteps and moving into careers that, for now, have many more men than women.

So in the name of Ada Lovelace, let’s celebrate! Here are some New Moon Girls who are moving past stereotypes that girls aren’t good at math and science, and love their STEM activities:

  • Lego League Picture - Running the Robot

This is Rachel and her sister, Lauren running their robot at the 2010 Wisconsin State First Lego League competition.

New Moon Girls celebrated the all-girl lineup of Google Science Fair winners this year, and spotlighted some of our members who worked to win science fairs in their schools and communities. Check out our interview with one of the winners, Naomi Shah!

  • New Moon Girl members Lauren and Rachel, along with their teammates Callie and Caitlin, Team won the Champion’s Award in the first-ever North American FIRST® LEGO League Open held at LEGOLAND® California this year! See how it all got started for Rachel.
  • Miya made her kitchen into a science lab! Check out her fun experiment anyone can do!

What are some STEM activities you love to do? Would you like to have a career in science, technology, engineering, or math when you get older? What do you think about the stereotype that girls aren’t good at science and math?

Have a great Ada Lovelace Day!
