Did you ever let a personal limit hold you back from following your dreams or doing something great? Against all odds, Samantha Garvey, 17, isn’t afraid to dream big.
Samantha isn’t letting anything hold her back from creating a better life for herself and her family. She was recently named a semifinalist in Intel Science Talent Search, the most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors in the country.
Not only does Samantha love science and working on her project in which she is researching the effects of predators on an animal called a ribbed muscle, she is learning Italian playing the violin and is ranked #4 in her class with a 3.9 GPA! On top of all of that, Samantha is homeless.
In an interview she did with ABC News, Samantha said she and her family have lived in hotels and homeless shelters for most of her life. However, their lives could change if Samantha wins the $100,000 scholarship grand prize. The top 40 finalists are also eligible to compete for over one million dollars in awards and scholarships.Even though she doesn’t have a permanent home, Samantha works very hard to do well in school. “I want to do better for myself,” she said in the interview. “I want a better life.”
The winners of Intel’s Science Talent Search will be named this week. Check here for the names of the winners.
New Moon Girls love science too! Last year, Maryn, 11, Minnesota did her science fair project on Jane Goodall, and Kira, 9, Alberta and her partner researched submarines!
