Soul food is an important part of my African American heritage. It shows how our people have made a lot out of just a little.
Through soul food, we gather together and show our love for one another. The soul food tradition has been passed down for many generations in my family—from my great-grandmother to my grandmother to my mom, and in years to come, it will be passed down to me.
I’m glad my family has continued this tradition, and I’ll be proud to pass it down, too.
Fall is finally here, summer has ended, and school has started for many girls. Leaves are changing color, and it’s getting colder outside. It’s time for sweaters, boots, and apple-picking!
Grab a mug of hot cocoa or tea, and take a look out the window. Are the leaves changing color yet? Some may be shades of yellow, orange, or even red, which comes from glucose (sugar) trapped in the leaves. Some trees even turn purple! Many people take walks outside in the fall to look at all the different colored leaves. What is your favorite color to see outside during autumn?
There are so many beautiful things to see outside during fall, such as leaves changing color, apple trees, and even pumpkins growing. Some pumpkin patches and apple orchards even have corn mazes and other fun family activities. Find ways to stay active in the cold weather, but make sure to bundle up and keep warm if you’re going outside.
What do you want to do this fall? What do you love about autumn? New Moon Girls share their favorite fall activities:
Help your family with chores (and have fun, too!). Pianogirl, 14, Vermont enjoys jumping into leaf piles her dad makes when raking their yard.
In her Autumn Pleasures poem, Sara, 10, Illinois recommends picking apples and giving thanks.
You and your family can visit apple orchards or pumpkin patches. Claire, 11, Virginia gets excited about pears, apples, and pumpkins in her poem September.
Time for volleyball season! Annie, 12, Indiana writes about a volleyball game in her poem, VOLLEYBALL. Join your school’s team, or show school spirit by going to the games.
