Only One Day Left! Join The Each One Reach One Campaign!

August 31 is the LAST DAY of our Each One Reach One campaign – where we have asked supporters like you to reach out to just one other person or organization and share New Moon Girls. We have gotten a fantastic response over the last two months for our Each One Reach One Campaign. Thank you!!

We still need your help to reach out to at least one person and share the value of NMG. With the support of all our members and the adults who care about them, we know we can do it. Let’s make the last days of Each One Reach One count!

You don’t have to make a big gesture to help New Moon Girls. Every action helps! Here are some simple ways you can sustain NMG.

  1. Each One Reach One: Get ONE friend to join or give ONE gift/renewal of membership before August 31.
  2. Sponsor A Membership for a school, library, a club or organization. It’s quick & really easy – plus you feel great helping girls who don’t get NMG on their own.
  3. Start the Conversation Sometimes it can be hard to know how to tell a friend about buying something you really believe in, like NMG.
  4. Use this Email example Email is great to share and spread the word—especially to family and community members you know! Get ideas from this email or use it as it is to let friends and family know about us and how they can support NMG.
  5. Give Out & Put Up Posters Do you want more people to know about NMG? It’s fun to spread the word with these girl-created posters. You can even make your own.

We appreciate your love and support so much. We’re doing everything we can to keep NMG alive and there for you and girls all over the world for as long as we can. To those who have supported us before and during the Each One Reach One campaign, we couldn’t have done it this long without you. We hope you will continue to share about us in the future.

Thank you for your help!

Love,

Nancy Gruver, NMG Founder

New Moon Girls Media

With our Each One Reach One campaign, there’s a great response as wonderful supporters like you take action! Thank you for supporting girls by spreading the word and ensuring the financial stability for member-supported NMG to continue into the future.

Great questions and suggestions have come in from both members and adult fans.  We want to hear all your ideas for the future of NMG and what you would like it to be. As a start, you’re invited to a special free video conference with me, NMG’s founder. I and other staff can’t wait to listen to your ideas and answer your questions.

Here is a question and a suggestion that came in just this week:

Question: Why do you have a Facebook Page?

We don’t encourage girls in our age group to be part of social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Girls’ safety is our top online priority, and NMG can’t guarantee their security in unmoderated social networks. That’s why we have NewMoon.com – fully moderated by specially trained adult volunteers.

Public social networks are how we connect with parents, other adult advocates of girls like teachers & youth workers, and other like-minded organizations. This way we build an adult community that works together to empower girls globally. We send the adult readers of our enews to our Facebook page, Twitter, Google+, and Pinterest, so they can be active and informed in everything we are working on for girls.

But we never direct our girl members to these unmoderated social networks. The enews that goes to girls is different and excludes any mention of or links to our social networks.

Suggestion: Share with your pediatrician/family doc/dentist

Many parents, grandparents, and girls have been telling us how they’re spreading the word about New Moon Girls.

One mom, Sonia, said she and her daughter brought a copy of NMG magazine with them to an appointment with the pediatrician. The pediatrician liked it so much, she ordered TWO memberships – one for each waiting area! Sonia suggested that we share this idea with other parents and adults so you can do the same, saying that if your daughters’ doctors decide to order a membership, other girls and their parents who read it might want to get memberships, too! Thanks Sonia  & for your amazing effort to get more memberships for New Moon Girls, and for sharing your idea with us!

Tell us your ideas about the future of NMG and questions at our free video conference next week with NMG founder, Nancy Gruver! Anyone with internet access can come and be a part of this discussion.

New Moon Girls Media

Momentum is growing! There are only 2 weeks left in our Each One Reach One campaign! What you and all our supporters do from now till Aug 31 is so important for the future of NMG. We need your help more than ever to reach out to at least one person and share the value of NMG.

With the support of all our members and the adults who care about them, we know we can do it!

So why do we need your help now? We’re true member-supported media – we don’t run any ads in our magazine or online! Since the recession, we haven’t gotten the number of members we need to keep our community financially healthy. We’re very thrifty but it still takes plenty of money, expertise and time to make the magazine & social network high-quality and get them to girls.

We’re proud to be a sustainable business – no huge salaries or wasteful expenses here. It takes only 30 new or renewed members per day (on average) to cover all the costs and sustain NMG financially. And now we have even more membership options to offer, including our new e-magazine! A full membership costs less than 15 cents per day! Is it worth that to you?

You don’t have to make a big gesture to help New Moon Girls. Every action helps! Here are some simple ways you can sustain NMG.

  • Each One Reach One: Get ONE friend to join or give ONE gift/renewal of membership before August 31.

  • Sponsor A Membership for a school, library, a club or organization. It’s quick & really easy – plus you feel great helping girls who don’t get NMG on their own.
  • Start the Conversation Sometimes it can be hard to know how to tell a friend about buying something you really believe in, like NMG.
  • Use this Email example Email is great to share and spread the word—especially to family and community members you know! Get ideas from this email or use it as it is to let friends and family know about us and how they can support NMG.
  • Give Out & Put Up Posters Do you want more people to know about NMG? It’s fun to spread the word with these girl-created posters. You can even make your own.

We appreciate your love and support so much. Thanks to everyone who’s already helped the Each One Reach One campaign! We’re doing everything we can to keep NMG alive and there for you and girls all over the world for as long as we can. Thank you for your help!

Love,

Nancy Gruver, NMG Founder

Mixed Messages in the Media

Have you ever felt like you didn’t want to participate in something because you were insecure about your own body? Studies today are showing that confusing messages from the media could be causing this.

Julia Bluhm is a 14-year-old girl activist who is putting the pressure on for magazines to show real body images of real girls. According to the article Women’s Magazines and the Cult of Hypocrisy by Laura Bates, Julia created a petition to have Seventeen place one unaltered photo in their magazine every month. The petition received 84,000 signatures and got a lot of media attention! In early July, Seventeen magazine responded by giving their promise to only publish unphotoshopped pictures. Although this is a huge step, Julia and many other girls across the globe are hoping for more magazines to follow in Seventeen’s path.

“I love being with my friends they’re so friendly!” – Julia, 11, California. Being with those you love is a great way to boost self esteem!

So why is it so important to see real girls in the media?

Luna explains how girls who do not look like the unrealistic images of models in the pages of magazines or actors on TV might begin to think that something is wrong with them. Girls have all sorts of different types of bodies, styles of hair, and other unique features that should be celebrated among all media sources!
But many types of media that girls are bombarded with don’t make it easy for girls to appreciate themselves. While one magazine might display a picture of an actor who they describe as being too thin and unhealthy, another magazine is posting similar pictures of the actor and writing that we should try to look more like her. It’s pretty confusing huh?

It becomes difficult to not believe what many magazines, movies, and TV shows consider “beauty”, when in reality girls should be able to love themselves and their bodies just the way they are.

It’s hard to see past these messages of what “beauty” means in the media, but here are some ways you can help yourself and your friends stay confident AND take action, just like Julia:

  • Luna’s Inner Beauty Tip: Help Other Girls Smile When They Look in the Mirror discusses one action that can give girls confidence. By creating decals with positive messages on them to be put on mirrors in public places, they are helping to inspire others. Find even more Inner Beauty Tips here!
  • If you have any questions related to body image, just ask Tori! Tori is a psychotherapist and answers one question every week, it’s even anonymous!
  • In the Real Beauty Guide section of New Moon, girls can read what others believe beauty means to them!
  • Does music always make you feel better? Check out these favorite inner beauty songs voted by girls!
  • Feel awesome about yourself and help others out with Operation Beautiful!

On NewMoon.com, Luna wrote a story about some harmful effects gossip magazines can have on girls. If you are feeling upset or not good enough after being exposed to certain images in magazines, it might be best to choose a new way of keeping yourself occupied.  Jesse, 13, Texas wroteabout choosing books who bring attention to brave, adventurous girls instead of reading stories that always have the same stereotypical girls and boys featured.

Ada, 11, Vermont wrote, “Reading lets my imagination take over”. Reading a book is a great substitute to reading a gossip magazine.

We want you to know how important we think you are, and that’s why we never use photoshopped images in our magazine or on NewMoon.com – we only use pictures of real girls, girls who are beautiful for what they do and who they are, not how they look.

Have magazine images ever affected you? Do you think the media is doing a better job now with using pictures of real girls? Or has it gotten worse? How do you stay confident and know you’re beautiful inside and out? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment!
