Start your day off right with breakfast!

Do you eat breakfast every morning?

Lana, 11, from Minnesota dressed up her morning pancakes with some delicious fruit!

Did you know that nearly 40% of kids don’t? Now that summer is over and school is back in session, it is important to eat breakfast every day to give your body the fuel it needs. Even though mornings can be hectic trying to pick out an outfit or run to the bus, take some time to eat a nutritional breakfast. You will feel the difference!

Everybody says breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and let me tell you why:

1.       It gives your body key nutrients it needs to keep you moving through the day.
2.       It helps you keep your energy up so you don’t get tired.
3.       It helps you concentrate better in school and get better grades.
4.       It helps you make healthier choices throughout the day.

When mornings get busy or because they just don’t feel hungry yet, many girls skip breakfast. Don’t do it! Skipping this meal will leave you feeling hungry, tired and unable to focus.  According to Everydayhealth.com, these five simple changes in your routine can make sure you have time for breakfast.

1.       Get up ten minutes earlier. It sounds simple, and it is!
2.       Don’t eat right before bed. This way, you’ll be hungry for breakfast in the morning.
3.       Plan ahead with your parents so you have fast and easy options for breakfast on-the-go.
4.       Prepare your breakfast the night before. You can cut up fruit or pour cereal in a bowl.
5.       Get the rest of your family involved and follow these fun family breakfast ideas.

New Moon Girls know the importance of getting good nutrition. When Freeda in Ohio asked others for tips on how to fit breakfast in her morning routine, she received lots of helpful advice.

For example, Maddie in Ohio said, “Sometimes I eat breakfast on the go, so if you walk or drive to school, maybe you could take a little breakfast/snack with you!”

Did you know New Moon has an entire page dedicated to breakfast recipes? Here, you can search for or submit recipes for your favorite breakfast dishes!

Sister to Sister: Going Back To School

Classroom PictureSummer is winding down and it’s time for school! Whether you’re excited or dreading this time, here are some tips to help make it a little smoother!

As tempting as it can be to try to stay up late and make the most of the last days of summer, it can be helpful to go to bed at a more reasonable time and get up a little earlier. This can help make it easier so you’re able to wake up in time for school and you won’t be dragging your feet every morning.  Try to get enough sleep each night.

Have your school supplies packed up and ready to bring to school a few days before school starts! This can help so you know you have everything you need and can just focus on picking your backpack/bag up and leaving. Or if you have the option of going to school a few days before it starts and setting up your locker/cubby and putting your supplies away can help relieve some of the stress!

If you’re headed to a new school try to see if you can go and tour it to find where classes will be, where your locker is (if you have lockers) and get a feel for the environment. Most likely if you’re going into high school there will be some time of orientation to help you meet some kids and see the school.

It can help to set up outfits (if this is something that matters to you) the night before, this way you don’t need to go through your entire wardrobe in the morning trying to find something you like.  Choose something you feel comfortable and confident in, that still passes dress code.  Also, when shopping for new clothes for the year, it helps to buy clothes that can last you through the year, not all summer clothes that won’t be sensible in winter (unless you have summer weather all year, then go ahead!). If you wear uniforms, then I guess problem solved! But it still can’t hurt to try just lay out what you’re going to need the day before.

If you switch classrooms, it can be helpful to see what friends are in your classes, this way you can know you’ll be seeing some friendly faces every day.

It sounds cliché, but eating breakfast really is key. I find I have more energy when I eat even if it’s a bowl of cereal. It can help keep you going until lunchtime (or snack time) and helps you stay focused.

More tips:

  • I find it helpful to keep a few dollars in my bag in case I forget my lunch, or stay after school and want to buy a snack at the vending machine.
  • Always have some pads/tampons in your backpack and possibly some clean underwear, in case you ever get your period unexpectedly!

I hope this helps!

When Is The Right Age To Get A Cell Phone?

Do you ever think you absolutely need a cell phone?  If you don’t have one of your own, do you feel like you are the only one of your friends who doesn’t? Well, you are not alone!

Cell phone use among teens and pre-teens has been a hot topic in the news and even on New Moon Girls! Girls have a lot to say about when they should get a cell phone and how to use it appropriately.

I wasn’t allowed to get my own cell phone until I had my driver’s permit at 15. I thought I was the only person in school who did not have a cell phone, but I was wrong. Now, more and more girls are getting phones at younger ages, some even as young as 8 years old!

There are lots of good and bad things about having a cell phone at a young age.

Pros:
1. Your Parents can stay in touch with you at almost any time.
2. You can get in touch with your parents easily if there is a change of plans, or even an emergency.
3. You can keep in touch with your friends who have cell phones.
4. Having your own phone teaches you responsibility, like how to take care of it, not lose it and how to stay within your talking and texting minutes.

Cons:
1. Cell phones are expensive. You have to pay for calls, texting, games and even ringtones.
2. They are not as supervised, and your parents have the right to know everyone you are calling or texting.
3. They can be a big distraction from chores, family and even school work.

Wanting a cell phone just because everyone else has one may not be a very convincing argument when you’re begging your parents to let you have one. Having a cell phone is a big responsibility and not as glamorous as you might think.

New Moon member, Mystery Gal says that she really wants a cell phone, but her mom won’t let her. Check out the advice she got from other New Moon Girls.

Elita from California was wondering when other girls got their phones, this is the advice she got from others. Rachel from California said, “I wanted a cell phone really badly, and now that I have one its not a big deal.”

Voice your opinion, and take Sofia’s poll on what age is appropriate for girls to get a cell phone. You can also go to the Ask A Girl page and ask about or see advice from other girls on when they got their phones. Or, visit the Sister to Sister message board to discuss with older girls about having a cell phone.

Sister to Sister: When Your Parents Won’t Let You Do Things

Mentor Alexa

Sister to Sister Mentor: Alexa

We always want to do things that our parents won’t let us, and suddenly, when we’re around middle school-age, there are a ton of things that we really want to do. There are various intelligent, responsible ways to request your parents’ permission to do something- although, I must say, nothing is foolproof. Here are some tips:

1. Do it gradually

In ninth grade, I wanted to go to stores in the mall by myself like most other girls in my grade. Most girls went on their own, dropped off by parents. My mom said no to that immediately, but instead, she allowed me to take a friend with us to the mall. This was a pretty fair compromise, but of course, I still wanted more freedom. After I’d done that, my mom would let the friend and I go to a separate store while she stayed in the mall. Now, I’m allowed to be dropped off with a friend, just like those other girls. I was almost sixteen when this happened, and most girls I know were allowed to do this when they were about twelve. It’s always frustrating to not be allowed to do things that other people can- and sometimes you’ll feel lame for not being allowed- but be patient!

2. Prove your responsibility

If you want a pet or particularly special object that your parents won’t allow you to have, it’s often a case of responsibility. When my brother wanted video game consoles, like a GameCube, as a little kid, he would always ask for them repeatedly, which simply annoyed my parents. Doing little things like making your bed, clearing and setting the table, and helping out with siblings without being asked get noticed over time, and your parents will realize your responsibility might just be enough for that iPod or dog that you desperately want.

3. Present an eloquent argument.

Nagging and saying, “But everyone else can!” I’ve learned over time, will just annoy your parents and deter them from saying yes to your request. For some parents, really explaining why you want something can be key. For example, my friend Cate desperately wanted to do something that our friends could do, but her mom wouldn’t allow her to have one because she thought it would detract from her schoolwork. Cate made a point of showing her mom her high grades she achieved on a very busy schedule. The deciding factor, though, was the PowerPoint presentation Cate and I made and Cate presented to both her parents. The argument wasn’t only well-planned and eloquent, but the effort she put in showed how much she cared.

Hopefully these tips will help you convince your parents to do things in a polite, adult, and responsible way, but remember first and foremost: every parent has different rules, and you won’t always be allowed to do the same fun things as all of your friends. But from someone with some of the strictest parents in my group of friends, I’ve learned to be patient and have fun in my own ways with my other strictly-parented friends.

Best of luck,

Alexa

Art is important! How Do You Express Yourself?

Is art an important way to express yourself?

Think about it: you have all of these changes going on as you grow up. You might be put in different situations and feeling different emotions. You need a way to express these feelings where you feel comfortable being you! This might come in the form of writing stories for New Moon, creating dance routines or painting.

While women are shattering barriers in many career areas such as police work, firefighting and construction, they are now also being recognized for their self-expression as graffiti artists! Graffiti art is on the rise with more women showing their talent than ever before, opening the door for girls everywhere to become recognized artists too!

Graffiti art is found on the sides of buildings, under bridges and even on train cars. While many people consider it to be vandalism — when you damage another person’s property on purpose — many female graffiti artists believe it to be a form of folk art. Folk art is art that is made by untrained artists, it shows off the talent of the “common people” and tells the viewer something about the time and place the artists lived in.

The Women’s Media Center recently wrote a feature on female graffiti artists “making their mark” in the creative world.

One female graffiti artist who calls herself Mickey told WMC uses graffiti art as her own form of self-expression. She says creating graffiti art has allowed her to find her voice and be herself.

Another artist who calls herself Lady Pink has also found graffiti art to be a good form for self-expression. She says she used to be quiet and shy with her art, but she realized she had a message to send and graffiti art has allowed her to express her message.

Now, Lady Pink works with schools to inspire young artists. She told the WMC that she wants young girls to know that they can do anything they want, even if other people don’t believe they can. She runs her own mural painting company and her work has even been seen in gallery shows! The artist Mickey is now being hired to paint beautiful murals on the sides of buildings. These women’s art is finally receiving the recognition it deserves!

While art such as graffiti is a powerful form of self-expression, it is still very important to have permission before creating any art on any wall. You should always ask a parent’s permission even before painting or writing on your own bedroom wall.

Many New Moon Girls love to express themselves through art. Check out the Moon Glow Gallery to get inspired and upload art of your own!
