Great Chat in Luna's Chatterbox!

Hey, girls! Many of you have been asking about whether I’m on Girl2Girl Talk. I’ve decided not to do Girl2Girl Talk because I’ve got a lot of other stuff to keep up with on the site and don’t have time. But I LOVE chatting with girls, so you can chat with me monthly in Luna’s Chatterbox!

I just got done with my first chat in Luna’s Chatterbox! It was busy and a little crazy, but mostly awesome! Thanks so much to all the girls who joined us! If you weren’t able to make the chat, you can read the transcript here. I answer lots of common questions about New Moon in it. Check out the chat calendar for upcoming chat dates and topics — and leave your suggestions for future chats in the comments on this entry!

Letter to Girls from the September/October issue

The July/August issue brought compliments and some complaints from girls, like Dev, 12, from Connecticut: “I love New Moon Girls and the website. However, I think the magazine advertises NewMoon.com too much!”

Thanks for caring so much and telling us what you honestly think – I always like that! Let me explain whywe tell you about NewMoon.com in the magazine.

The website extends New Moon Girls magazine (NMG for short) beyond our wildest dreams. It gives all our members more than 20,000 pages of girl-created articles, poetry, fiction, art, photography, and video—plus girls’ opinions and advice on just about everything. If NMG had that many pages, few of us could afford it—or lift it!
Here’s just some of what I love about NewMoon.com:

  • Every member can speak out right away—not just the few who (months later) get a letter or article printed in NMG. For example, Ask a Girl questions and answers appear online just hours after you submit them– no more waiting six months! And we can include EVERY letter, not just the handful that fit in NMG.
  • It doesn’t replace NMG—it adds extras to the articles. For example, on p. 12, you’ll read part of our online chat with Gail Carson Levine. But the full chat was more than twice as long—and you can read every word on NewMoon.com. Even better, you can actually participate in chats with great authors like Gail!
  • It lets NMG readers all over the world make new friends and chat with each other.
  • It helps new girls learn about New Moon. More members will help us keep NMG going in this bad economy. You can help, too! Tell your friends, teachers and librarian how much you love New Moon because it helps girls stay true to themselves and make a better world! (Send them a free e-card or donate a subscription!)
  • I’m on the website all the time, so you can write me every day (if you want!).
  • You don’t have to visit NewMoon.com, even though it’s free with a NMG membership. We just want you (and girls reading NMG for the very first time) to know about it. NMG is the only place to reach girls who haven’t activated their online account yet.

I’m glad you love New Moon as much as I do—we’re so lucky to have each other!

Make a New Moon Love Video!

Hey, girls! If you love being a New Moon Girl, help us spread the word by making videos! Our goal is to bring 1,000 new members to New Moon this month, and your videos will help.

We’re looking for short videos by New Moon Girls members that tell us . . .

1)      What is a New Moon Girl?

2)      Why are you a New Moon Girl?

3)      What do you love about NewMoon.com and New Moon Girls magazine

Answer any or all of these questions on a video that’s 30 seconds or less. You can send us as many videos as you want! Then upload them to Your Stuff to share with other New Moon Girls. Send your video to friends and family who don’t have New Moon by clicking the “email to a friend” button under your video. If your parents say it’s OK, you can also put your video on YouTube.com to reach more girls, or email it to submissions@newmoon.com so that New Moon can run it on our YouTube channel.

I don’t want to miss a single video that comes in! So as soon as you’ve uploaded one to Your Stuff, please sticker me to let me know.

Love,

Luna

P.S. Need inspiration? Check out these great videos!

Check Out the Shout Out! Message Boards

One of my favorite parts of NewMoon.com are the Shout Out! Message Boards. This is where girls can go to discuss almost anything under the sun! Below are some examples of current discussions:

  • “D-I-S-R-E-S-P-E-C-T” on the How Aggravating! message board. This is a discussion about how to share your opinion respectfully, including examples of respectful and disrespectful sharing.
  • Check out the “If You’re Not Growing Club” on Body and Feelings to talk about growing up too slow, or too fast!
  • And then, head over to Rants and Raves to add your favorite strong female characters to the list in the topic, “Who are your favorite strong Girl Characters?”

Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s brand new Luna Picks! Thanks for everything you do to make New Moon Girls fantastic!

Girl2Girl Talk: Frequently Asked Questions Part 1

Hey, girls. I’ve been getting a lot of common questions about how to use Girl2Girl Talk. As you know, this program is brand new, so your questions are helping us learn about it, too. Below are answers to some of the most common questions. I’ll be adding new questions and answers to my blog, so check back often!

Q: I’ve requested my parents’ permission and sent reminders, but my parent still hasn’t gotten the message even after checking the spam folders. What can I do?

First, check to see if the request went to the email you use to log in to NewMoon.com. Check your own spam folders, too! If it’s not there, tell your parent to email help@newmoon.com with all the information about your membership and saying that she wants to give you permission to do G2G talk. She needs to include your full name and mailing address and also your membership number from the mailing label on your most recent issue of the magazine.

Q: Can I read my own Girl2Girl transcripts?

You can read your Girl2Girl Talk transcripts through your parents’ Girl2Girl account. Ask your parent(s) whether you can see them.

Q: When I click “Launch Girl2Girl Talk” all there is is my name and the icon-thingy, then there’s just a huge white box underneath it. Girls have requested me to be their friend, and I’ve replied yes, so I should be able to see my friend list somewhere, right? I can’t see it right now.

Girl2Girl has an option to “hide” offline users. If you use this option, your friends list will appear empty if all your friends are offline. To change this, go to “Preferences” in Girl2Girl and uncheck “Hide Offline Users.”

Q: When I accepted a friend invite, it usually pops up as a question mark, but it doesn’t show anything. What’s going on with Girl2Girl Talk?

A question mark will appear when a friendship request is pending. Sometimes, if you sent a request before your friend or you enabled pop-ups, you’ll miss the request. You can right click on girls’ names with question marks and click “Resubscribe” to send another request.

Q: Can you talk to more than one girl at once?

Soon, you’ll be able to talk to more than one girl at a time using Girl2Girl, but this feature isn’t ready quite yet. For now, you can enjoy lots of one-on-one conversation with your New Moon Girls friends!

Q: I’m not getting my friends’ requests, or my friends aren’t getting mine. What’s wrong?

The very first thing to check if you have not received friend requests is whether or not you have pop-ups enabled in your browser for www.newmoon.com. If you do not have pop-ups enabled for www.newmoon.com, the friend requests will not work. To enable pop-ups, click on Tools, then Options. Every browser is a little different, but from there you should be able to find Pop-ups and a way to add exceptions. Also remember, if you use multiple browsers (like if you sometimes use Internet Explorer but sometimes use Firefox), you must enable pop-ups in both browsers.

If pop-ups were not enabled and you enable them, the previous friend requests will not show up. Only new friend requests made after you enabled pop-ups will show up. So if you have friend names on your friend list with a question mark beside them, you can right-click on their names and choose Resubscribe. This will send a new request to that friend.

Q: Why can’t I see my friends list?

If your friend list was appearing previously, but now is not, check to see if you have the Hide Offline Users option chosen. To do this, click Preferences above your name. This will open a new box. Make sure that Hide Offline Users has no check mark. If there is a check mark by Hide Offline Users, click in the little box to make the check mark disappear. You can then close this window by clicking the red box with the x in the upper right hand corner. Close Girl2Girl Talk and then reopen it to see if you friend list appears.

Q: Is Girl2Girl Talk Safe?

Girl2Girl is one of the safest instant messaging programs for girls on the Internet. You can find more information about our safety features here.
